Working on UKAID and World Bank projects, I formed a wish to help schools. The greatest problem seemed to be the lack of reliable safe water. We started with water for one school community in 2011. The first borewell. Benjamin Koyoo\u2019s GroundWater NGO was already working on the problem. He emphasized the need to work with communities as active participants in fixing the water problem. A perfect fit. We set out to get safe water to 100 schools. We did it. We\u2019ve now got safe water to over 300 schools. Well over a quarter of a million lives transformed. We\u2019re now aiming to get safe water to 1,000 schools and communities. At an average of 1,000 beneficiaries per well, that\u2019s water for a million people. With your help, we will get there.<\/p>\n

We install new wells and rehabilitate broken wells in primary schools and communities in rural Kenya and beyond. Millions of people die from water-related diseases every year. Children are especially at risk, and young girls face barriers to education. Girls miss up to 5 days of school per month<\/a> due to their menstrual cycle, with additional days lost to water collection. This task isn\u2019t just time-consuming; it can be perilous, and the water they fetch is unsafe. Girls face threats like sexual harassment or attacks by wild animals during their walks. By building wells in primary schools, we not only provide safe water, but also help with efficient water use, promote sanitation and hygiene and improve education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our African water wells are 40-80 m deep and provide safe water for an average of 1,000 people for years. A significant number of wells in Africa have become inoperable due to a lack of maintenance and repairs. Our maintenance strategy, collaboration with schools, and co-development with communities ensure consistent operation, keeping the wells running for decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UK-funded Hidden Crisis Project highlights the enduring issue of water point failure, with an estimated 30-40% of water points being non-functional<\/a>.
