Projects / Borehole Reaches Cholera-Hit Namware

Completed May 2016

This year’s rains coincided with an outbreak of cholera to the Nyamware Primary School. Children were carried away to the Rabuor Health Centre and Kisumu General Hospital. When the school reopens next week the total number of pupils affected will be known.

But something will be different. Nyamware School will have a supply of fresh, clean water via a hand-pump. The schools' pupils will no longer need to walk a couple of miles to fill a plastic container from the Ombeyi River, a likely source of contamination.

This is good news for the 430 pupils, their 17 teachers, and the community. With any luck, cholera will be a thing of the past at Nyamware, and we hope those pupils who are currently ill survive. This school will now be on an upward trajectory, but there are many schools that are still far from safe.
